Chick lit is really kind of awesome. Not because it's light and frothy, although it often is, but because reading good chick lit is like having a conversation with a good girlfriend. You get insight into another woman, or many of them, and that's kind of nice. Before you pass off chick lit as something reserved solely for the beach or the plane, pick up one of these books and give it a deeper read.

1. Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding

Of course! This is the very definition of chick lit! I think you'll love Bridget more in the written form. Follow it up with the sequel … and the latest book if you're brave. I'm so not.
2. She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

Chick lit by someone other than a chick? Yep! This may not even qualify because there's nothing frothy about this story, but meeting Dolores will change your life.

If you like chick lit at all, you have to at least give Shopaholic a try. I mean, she's got a whole series by now. You might get invested!
4. Jemima J by Jane Green

Jane Green has many phenomenal books under her belt, but Jemima J is my absolute favorite. JJ finds her happy balance in this book, and she does so with wit, honesty, and vulnerability. She might inspire you to do the same.
5. Babyville by Jane Green

I had to include this one, too, because it describes three women at different stages of their lives, all dealing with babies in some way. If you're a thirtysomething, it'll get you.

The Ya-Yas have their own series now, too, if you count Little Altars Everywhere as the first. Even if you don't, Rebecca Wells has a voice. She has things to say and stories to share and I don't think you should miss them.

This is bigger than the average chick lit novel, too – at least, I thought so. Have you read it? Tell me what you think!

12. Notting Hell by Rachel Johnson

Notting Hell, Shire Hell, and Fresh Hell. You need to read all three. You're welcome.
13. Chasing Harry Winston by Lauren Weisberger

Told you! To be honest, though, I initially only picked up this book because of the title.
14. The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

Again, maybe not really chick lit, but everyone needs more Barbara Kingsolver in their lives.
