When choosing their reading material, many women won’t consider looking for biographies to read on the beach this summer, as they often consider them to be boring. But as long as you choose interesting people, biographies are usually far from being boring. So get yourself inspired this summer and check out these awesome biographies to read on the beach!
1 Lady Gaga
They just don’t come much more empowering than Gaga, so her biography has to be one of the best biographies to read on the beach. Poker Face: The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga charts her road to fame from her beginnings at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts to the superstar she is today.
2 Martha Stewart
Careers don’t come much more varied than that of Martha Stewart, the woman behind the homemaking dynasty. In Martha Stewart: Just Desserts, the dirt on her personal life is well and truly dished. Can you resist the sweet temptation of a book filled with so much gossip?
3 Anna Wintour
It may be from back in 2005, but this has to be one of the juiciest celebrity biographies for the beach. It’s certainly more true to life than a certain novel about what the devil wears, anyway. Because Anna’s friends and colleagues all refused to talk about her, Front Row: Anna Wintour draws from accounts of old school friends, ex-boyfriends, distant relatives and other people with a grudge to bear, but this certainly makes it interesting.
4 Princess Diana
In Diana: Her True Story, Andrew Morton exposed the sad truths of Diana’s unhappy marriage to Prince Charles and showed the royal family to be dysfunctional. What makes it so very interesting is that it dates from 1992, but that Morton’s principal (and previously anonymous) source was later revealed to be Princess Diana herself. If you want to know the truth about the British royal family, then you won’t find many better sources than this.
5 Elizabeth Taylor
Known as one of the most talented and beautiful actresses in history, Elizabeth Taylor appeared in more than sixty films and won two Academy Awards. But she is also famous for her personal life, with a grand total of eight marriages and a seemingly endless amount of health problems. Elizabeth: The Biography of Elizabeth Taylor is well worth a read, particularly for the coverage of her battles with drugs and alcohol, her fifth (and sixth) marriage to Richard Burton, her work as an AIDS activist and her more recent success as a business woman. It certainly has to be one of the richest biographies to read on the beach.
6 Joan Crawford
This was always going to make the list of the best biographies to read on the beach because it was written by Joan Crawford’s own adopted daughter. In Mommie Dearest, Christina’s story tells a story that could just as easily be titled ‘How not to be a mother.’ It’s certainly not one for you if it’s light reading you’re after, because of the shocking physical and psychological abuse described in the book.
7 Oprah Winfrey
There are a few different biographies on Oprah Winfrey, and it’s not surprising. Born as a poor black girl and abused during her childhood, the story of a woman who grew up to become one of the most influential women in the USA has to be worth reading.
Now you’ve got such a great choice of biographies to read on the beach, there’s really no excuse for not giving at least one or two a go. Whose biography will you be reading this summer?
