The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum You’ve all seen the film, but have you read the book? Although it’s much different to the movie, it still involves a girl named Dorothy who ends up in the Land of Oz after a tornado. There are actually fourteen different Oz books, and the movie only covers the events in the first book. There’s so much more to learn about Oz, and you never even knew it!

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley If you haven’t read Frankenstein yet, you should do so. Shelley wrote it after a group of her equals decided to have a competition to see who could create the best horror story. Clearly, she did well. This story is compelling, and asks a big question about what is considered human.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne The film Easy A, starring Emma Stone, was partially inspired by this novel. It’s about a woman who is unfaithful to her husband, and is sentenced to wear a scarlet A on her clothing in order to shame her. It shows how cruel people can be to women who do not adhere to society’s rules. Although it was written in the 1800s, it contains ideas that are still contemplated to this day.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain This story takes place in the south, and was published in 1884. Since it was written so long ago, it includes stereotypical ideas that nowadays can be found offensive. If you’re able to push past the ignorance of the time, then the book is fascinating. It’s definitely a story you should plan on reading.
