Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen)

One of the most amazing book characters that inspire me every single day is Elizabeth Bennet, from Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice, because she’s very intelligent and quick-witted. I especially admire her for her honesty and for her genuine sincerity. She is known for having "a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in any thing ridiculous." Sadly, these qualities all together are pretty hard to find nowadays. She really is an inspiration for me and for a lot of other women out there too!

Scarlett O’Hara (Gone with the Wind – Margaret Mitchell)

Scarlett O’Hara is another one of my favorite book characters and I really find her to be so inspirational! She’s so smart and so full of life... and she can create such beautiful dresses from drapes! She also has a remarkable talent for business and leadership and she even manages to recover her father’s plantation. We can really watch her grow up and transform into a rational, strong woman throughout the novel.

3

Sherlock Holmes (the Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

Oh, I couldn’t have left out the amazing Sherlock Homes from this list! He is such an irresistible mix of genius, charm, humor and irony. I absolutely adore him! This fantastic character was actually inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, who was the teacher of Arthur Conan Doyle and from whom the author borrowed the extraordinary sense of observation and the superior intelligence. He truly is an inspiration and a role-model for all of us, even though this ideal would be pretty hard to match.

4

Jane Eyre (Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte)

I was so impressed by the strong will of this wonderfully sketched character! Despite being an orphan from an early age, Jane Eyre is very intelligent and honest, but I really admire her for having such a strong belief in gender and social equality, her attitude challenging the Victorian prejudices against women and the poor - prejudices that, sadly, are present even nowadays. I love this quote, "I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will." That says it all!

5

Anne Elliot (Persuasion – Jane Austen)

Anne Elliot (Persuasion – Jane Austen) On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
This very inspiring book character is, like most of Jane Austen’s female characters, very intelligent, witty, even feisty and extremely considerate. Although Jane Austen said that "the bloom of youth has left her" and that she is not the prettiest of the young ladies in the novel, Anne becomes very attractive through the qualities she possesses. She is considered to be the strongest and most unique of Jane Austen’s characters; the author even referred to Anne Elliot as "a heroine who is almost too good for me."

Katniss Everdeen (the Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins)

I’m sure that most of you know already who Katniss Everdeen is. If you haven’t read the book you must have at least seen the movie. She is the protagonist and the narrator of this novel and I mostly admire her for being a strong, responsible and resourceful teenager, so much mature than her age would suggest. She shows us that you can be a mature and responsible person at any age and that maybe, you should stop finding all sorts of excuses for you behavior because you are the one who decides how you act.

7

Cosette (Les Miserables – Victor Hugo)

Cosette (Les Miserables – Victor Hugo) On iTunes at: itunes.apple.com
She is this very sensitive girl, who even though she was an orphan at an early age and grew up in an atmosphere of poverty and fear, spending her childhood as a servant for the Thénardiers in Montfermeil... but this awful experience didn’t make her hardened or cynical and she never adopted their cruel views, still managing to keep her innocence, the thing that highlighted her goodness and decency. Despite all that hardship that she has to face, she blossoms into a beautiful, educated young woman and finds fulfillment in love.

So, there you go, this is my list of 7 famous book characters that really inspire me to always try to be better. Do you find any of these characters truly inspirational? What other remarkable book characters do you know? Please, do tell me about them in the comments section!

Scarlet O'hara was a selfish, mean spirited woman who stepped all over people, especially those who cared about her. If that is your idea of strong...
