7 Things to Love about Book Clubs ...

Cris

In a world that is fixated with everything fast and furious, it’s nice to slow things down, grab a book and talk about it with people who love literature and understand the joy of discovering a different world from pages of books. Joining a book club is the perfect answer to a hectic lifestyle. Here are my reasons why I love being part of a book club:

1. Talking about Books

It’s all very “old fashioned” but book clubs are simply people talking about the latest and greatest printed word. There are no TVs around; just people and books trying to make sense of the printed word and the message the author wants to convey in his/her book.

2. Meeting New People

If you are looking to spice up your life, being a member of a book club will have you meeting new and different people. Maybe younger, maybe a wee bit older… but always intellectually stimulating and always with something to say about authors and endings (or beginnings). In the book club that I am part of, I get to meet teachers, students, lawyers, corporate slaves and real estate agents; and they always bring something relevant and interesting to the table. I walk out of every book club session feeling more knowledgeable than before.

3. Always Something New to Discover

With a new book to read each and every month, being a book club member is certainly never dull. There are no reruns to sit through and you can take your time reading through each page. If its Arctic cold outside or a balmy summer’s day, the turn of a new page always brings something new and different. For instance, in November, we discussed a book about poems inspired from the events that occurred during World War I. Hearing personal stories from my fellow book club members was a great experience. What I just knew from books was brought to life with their testimonies and shared experiences.

4. Learning Life Lessons

Maybe your new monthly book will focus on cracking the German’s secret Enigma codes during World War II or a book that is ready to blast off into another galaxy far far away. Whatever the case, there is always something you can learn from the pages of a good book. In one book club session, we discussed Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century. It was an economics book, a technical one, and yet I was able to view it from different perspectives and understand that in Piketty's perspective, a great majority of the world's wealth is in the hands of the very few.

5. Celebrating Special Occasions with Friends

Book club aficionados are not devotees but many of them will turn into some of your best friends ever. What better way to say “Merry Christmas” than sharing a good meal during the holidays or celebrate birthdays with your book buddies.

6. Getting to Read Books You Never Knew about

Ever have a hankering to know more about Neanderthals? What’s at the top of Machu Picchu? Sometimes a good book will “transport” you to worlds you never knew with characters from all points of the globe. There are literally thousands of books that you have never heard of … and a book club will be able to bring them all to life before your eyes!

7. Something to Look Forward to

The best thing about a book club is that every month you have something new and exciting to look forward to. Club members may get special discounts at both local and national book outlets so finding a new book each month is a snap. Plus, you get that thrill of hearing the reviews of people who actually read the book. Honest reviews with no pretensions.
