Elizabeth I's life was full of drama, and this excellent novel follows the Queen from her birth to the very end of her reign. Elizabeth's childhood was turbulent, and even once she became Queen she faced danger, from assassination attempts to the invasion of England. It's an extraordinary story, and Legacy does Elizabeth's life complete justice.

Wolf Hall

Wolf Hall and its sequel Bring Up The Bodies won't be to everyone's taste, since they're written in the present tense. But if you can get used to the style, you'll enjoy this novel about Henry VIII's Machiavellian minister Thomas Cromwell. There's an adaptation starting soon on UK television.

If you're a fan of Anne Boleyn you should hunt out a copy of this out-of-print novel. It's one of my favorite novels about the Tudors and really brings alive the character of this extraordinary woman. Anne Boleyn was part of a dramatic stage in English history, and an absolutely fascinating woman.

Tudors: a History of England from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I (Peter Ackroyd)

Now for some non-fiction books on the Tudors. If you're looking for a less scholarly book on the Tudors this would fit the bill. Peter Ackroyd has written several very readable history books that will appeal to all readers. It misses out the first Tudor King, Henry VII, but covers the near-century from the accession of Henry VIII in 1509 to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603.
