7 Reasons to Read Sherlock Holmes Stories ...

When I was in fourth grade I was introduced to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories by a teacher, and I discovered there are many reasons to read Sherlock Holmes mysteries. I fell in love with the intrigue of the stories, I also was taken by Holmes’ unusual character. The way Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson solved mysteries fascinated me. Although you can find Sherlock Holmes on TV and in movies, there are still plenty of reasons to read Sherlock Holmes and become intrigued with these classic mystery stories.

1 Hours of Entertainment

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories and 4 novels in the Sherlock Holmes series. All of these stories can provide hours of entertainment. They are filled with mystery, and they all have different and unusual characters that provide plenty of entertainment. Because these stories are so interesting, it is very difficult to become bored. The hours of entertainment you will get from reading these stories is just one of the many reasons to read Sherlock Holmes.

2 No Two Stories Are Alike

With so many stories, it would be easy to think that some of them would be similar. However, each story is different from all of the others. For example, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” is vastly different from “A Study in Scarlet.” The different nature of each story is what keeps the mystery alive. When you read Sherlock Holmes stories you will always be trying to guess the mystery.

One of the great things about the Sherlock Holmes stories is that they are not predictable. Each story will keep you guessing to the very end. This is especially true when you can’t see where Holmes is going with a clue. Often, the clues he finds seem unimportant, but in the end these innocuous clues are what solve the mystery!

He has an odd combination of qualities that include trustworthiness, integrity, sensibility, a lack of emotion, and a display of superiority. All of these characteristics combine to make Holmes a likable character that you want to read more about.

The combination of the intriguing mysteries and unusual characters make the Sherlock Holmes stories riveting. When I read them, I would often stay up late and read the stories straight through. I wanted to know the solution to the captivating mysteries. It was always worth staying up late to find out how Holmes solved the mystery, and I never cared if I was tired the next day!

6 Great for Families

If you want a family activity that gets you away from the TV, you should read Sherlock Holmes stories with your family. The mysterious nature of these stories makes them perfect for reading out loud. All of your family members will remain captivated. Also, reading the Sherlock Holmes stories is a great way to get kids reading more.

7 There’s Nothing like the Original

Currently, you can watch Elementary, which is a modern spin on Sherlock Holmes, every week on TV. You can also watch the Hollywood movies about Sherlock Holmes. While both of these are great entertainment, there is still nothing like the original stories. The mystery, intrigue, and originality of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes can only be captured in the books.
