7 Meaningful Quotes from Perks of Being a Wallflower ...

I've never related to a passage or a line so deeply until I laid my eyes on the quotes from Perks of Being a Wallflower. It left a significant imprint on me because every line spoke to me and every character tugged at my heartstrings. If you are not familiar with this book, it’s a beautiful and painful story of a fifteen year old boy, Charlie, who shares his life with unimaginable level of honesty. It’s raw and deep, so I wanted to share some of the most meaningful quotes from Perks of Being a Wallflower.

1. Infinite Happiness

(Your reaction) Thank you!

One of the most famous quotes from Perks of Being a Wallflower is probably, ‘And in that moment I swear we were infinite’. It’s ambiguous and vague, but it can touch each person in a very different way. To me, this quote represents a moment of happiness when everything seems to be okay even if it’s not and that moment seems to go on forever. And you want it to go on forever!

2. Things Change

(Your reaction) Thank you!

‘Things change and friends leave and life doesn't stop for anybody.’ This combination of 11 words is basically life in a nutshell. It’s true; nothing ever stays the same because even the most permanent things fluctuate. Promises are not always kept and people come, and go, but we learn to deal with those things because life goes on!

3. Choosing Your Own Path

(Your reaction) Thank you!

‘I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there.’ From birth our ideas and beliefs are shaped from what we hear and what we see, but there comes a point in life when we are able to decide our own fate. And that’s exactly what this quote says.

4. Happy and Sad

(Your reaction) Thank you!

‘I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.’ Once you think about it, you feel like this quote completely applies to your life. We all have emotional scars from the past that will always be in the back of our heads, even when we move on and live in complete happiness. We are all happy but yet sad. It’s a hard concept to fathom.

5. The Love We Accept

(Your reaction) Thank you!

‘We accept the love we think we deserve.’ The quote is very direct but there is a deeper meaning to it. Our view and perspective of ourselves plays a big role in who we accept. While some might settle for less because of their low self-esteem, others might never find ‘the one’ because no-one can meet their high standards. It’s an interesting concept to think about.

6. Everyone Loves Each Other

(Your reaction) Thank you!

‘I am very interested and fascinated how everyone loves each other, but no one really likes each other.’ This quote clearly describes my high school. Everyone tries to fit in, like each other and be liked by others, but nobody is really honest with themselves. It definitely motivates me to be true to my feelings and not waste time on something I don’t believe in.

7. No Sad Endings

(Your reaction) Thank you!

‘Please believe that things are good with me, and even when they’re not, they will be soon enough.’ Ever heard of sayings along the lines of if you’re not happy then it’s not the end, or if you’re going through hell, keep on going? This is something similar to that. Not only does it shine a light on Charlie’s character but it gives hope to the readers during difficult times.

If I could, I would probably quote the whole book, but instead I would like to recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it. However if you did, what are some lessons you learned from it? Share your thoughts in the comments!
