If there is something that you can always rely on in the world of cinema, it is that filmmakers love to get their ideas and inspiration from novels! Some of the best movies ever made have been book adaptations, so there is no need to be snobby about them or bemoan the lack of original stories being told on the big screen. There is definitely room for both! Here are ten books that are becoming movies in 2019.
1. The Rhythm Section by Mark Burnell
Blake Lively and Jude Law are set to star in this pulse-racing mystery thriller about a woman whose family die in a plane crash that turns out not be an accident. The novel has all the makings of a great movie so I hope it lives up to the hype!
2. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
An all-star cast including Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland are set to bring this novel to life; a story about a town where everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts! It’s the first of a trilogy, so best to get involved early.
3. Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
With Cate Blanchett in the main role, this looks set to be a great adaptation of a quirky novel about a girl who goes on the search for her mother who disappears one day. Was she kidnapped? Did she run away? Only one way to find out!
4. Pet Sematary by Stephen King
Many people describe this as the most frightening novel that Stephen King has ever written, and that really is saying something! The book tells the story of a family who settle in a house next to a pet graveyard, and the super dark things start to unfold!
5. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
With eight books worth of material to get through, this could be the next big thing in young adult movies. The science fiction franchise is set to begin with a movie based on the first two novels, with stars like Judi Dench and Josh Gad involved.
6. The Woman in the Window by a.J. Finn
If you are looking for your new favourite Gone Girl, The Girl On The Train type movie, then The Woman In The Window is the thriller for you! It’s going to star Amy Adams in the lead role, which guarantees high quality!
7. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
It’s always a big deal when a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel gets turned in to a movie, and The Goldfinch was a smash hit a few years back. Ansel Elgort and Nicole Kidman are among the cast.
8. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
The first in a best selling trilogy, the big screen adaptation of The Rosie Project is set to come out sometime this year. It’s about a geneticist who has never been on a second date, who embarks on a scientific experiment to find the perfect partner!
9. Little Woman by Louisa May Alcott
Little Women is no stranger to the big screen treatment, but it’s been a good while since the last high profile adaptation, and with the like of Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson involved, I’m excited!
10. Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
There is always room for a little classic murder mystery in cinema, and you can’t get any more classic than Agatha Christie! Kenneth Branagh will be back to reprise his role after 2017’s Murder On The Orient Express.
