There are a lot of things fairy tales don’t tell us about life. Just like Neil Gaiman said in Coraline “Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”. Fairy tales remind us of our childhood, of our dreams and hopes and they inspire us in the choices that we make. But despite the fact that most fairy tales have happy endings, a lot of them have a dark and horrific history that has been altered so that people could enjoy them more. Here are 7 things fairy tales don’t tell us about life that you should consider:

1. There Isn’t Always Someone There to Rescue You
This is one of the most important things fairy tales don’t tell you about real life. You need to learn how to rescue yourself because even though in every story there is someone who will save the main character, in life, you need to use your own strength to get out of trouble. You’ll have to save yourself every now and then, so be prepared to face all the obstacles that you may encounter in your path.
2. You Don’t Sing While You Work
Even though in fairy tales, the characters always sing when they work, like Snow White and her dwarf friends or Cinderella when she does her housework, you might not do this when you have a lot of tasks that you need to take care of. Fairy tales have taught us that singing helps us get throughout the work day but sometimes, even the cheeriest songs can’t make the things go easier.
Frequently asked questions
3. Beauty Comes in Every Shape
In most fairy tales, the main character always looks like the perfect woman with the perfect skin, beautiful hair and the perfect figure. Well, you shouldn’t feel bad if you are not a size 2, since beauty does come in every shape in real life. You need to appreciate more who you are as a person and be grateful for what you have.
4. Ugly Doesn’t Mean Evil
Even though in fairy tales, the villains are always very ugly physically, you should know that in real life, ugly doesn’t mean bad. Bad people can be extremely attractive and still hurt us. Don’t judge people based on their appearance because the way a person looks has nothing to do with the way they are on the inside.
5. Life Can Be Good with a Step-Family
Almost all step-families in fairy tales are evil. Well, you shouldn’t believe that the same rule applies in real life because you won’t be doomed to being unhappy if you belong to this kind of family. Even though blending families can be quite difficult sometimes, with some hard work and patience, you might even discover that blended families are great and that all those worries were for nothing.

6. Sometimes You Need to Be Tough
The main characters in fairy tales are always kind, nice and sweet but in life you need to be tough sometimes, so that others won’t step all over you. There are times in life when being sweet and nice won’t get you very far. You need to be a bit more tough to get things done or to get what you want.
7. Let Your Inner Beauty Shine
In real life, every day will not be a perfect hair day since there will always be days when you will feel less beautiful or perfect. You won’t be able to look like a princess 24/7, especially when you are really busy and when you have a lot of things you need to take care of. But instead of feeling insecure, try to let your true beauty shine and enjoy yourself, no matter what you do.
Most fairy tales are happy, inspiring and fun but they don’t teach us everything we need to know about real life. Do you know any other things fairy tales don’t tell us about life? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments section!
