Even if you aren’t attached this year, it can be heartwarming to read love stories when Valentine’s Day gets close. Whether they make you happy or inspire you to get out there and hunt down your soulmate, there’s something about a great love story that can lift your mood and help you feel like the world isn’t such a bad place after all. Here are some love stories sure to make your spirits soar this year.
1. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
If there’s ever been a love story that you need to hear, it’s this one. This was an assigned book when I was in high school, which sort of detracted from its allure. If that’s the same for you, it’s time to read it again. This love story is about Catherine and Heathcliff and how love can make you do something that will change your entire life.
2. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
This book is very long and there is a lot going on besides the love aspect. However, the passion between Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara dominates the pages of this Civil War love story. You will laugh and cry with the two of them as they go through their lives together and decide if they are meant to be forever or not. If you aren’t a reader, the movie is just as great!
3. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
No list of love stories would be complete without something written by Nicholas Sparks, right? In this classic, you meet a World War II vet who has returned home to renovate a former plantation home while he pines away for the girl he loves, who is the one who got away. When she returns to town, you are completely swept up in their epic love story, one that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
4. The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
Here is a story filled with unrequited love. Meggie is in love with a man she can never have, but there is another man very much in love with her, though she doesn’t feel the same way. Set against the backdrop of a sheep herding family in Australia, you get to know three generations of families and what happens when love isn’t given back.
5. The End of the Affair by Graham Greene
In this love story, you meet a man who was having an affair with a woman who has died. There is just as much hate in the story as there is love, but you also get to experience the main character as he rediscovers his love of God and how that relationship can get him through the loss of his earthly love.
6. The Pact by Jodi Picoult
When two teenagers fall in love, you know there is going to be drama. When one of them is found shot dead with a bullet from the gun of the other teen’s father, you will also feel the loss of a young love. However, when the boy claims the bullet was meant for himself, you learn about the pact made based on the love the two teens share with each other. Picoult always writes epic novels and this one is perfect for Valentine’s Day this year.
7. Sand Dollar: a Story of Undying Love by Sebastian Cole
If you want a story surrounding how two soulmates come into each other’s lives and saves them both, this is the story you should be reading. It’s all about how a man meets the woman of his dreams and how they both make each other better people. Of course, there are secrets and intrigue too. It will be hard to put this one down!
8. Gabriel's Inferno by Sylvain Reynard
When sweet and innocent Julia Mitchell enrols as a grad student in Dante specialist Professor Gabriel Emerson's class he finds himself on a journey where his past and present collide. A captivating and wildly passionate tale of one man's escape from his own personal hell as he searches for love and forgiveness.
9. The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay
Ready to get stuck into a slow-building, character-driven romance about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances? Meet Nastya, a hot mess of a girl and Josh, who just wants to be left alone.
