2. Kate Chopin (1850 – 1935)

Kate Chopin was a woman very much ahead of her time, writing a novel called The Awakening in 1899 that tells the story of a woman who experiences a spiritual and erotic awakening and proceeds to leave her husband and children for another man. These kind of themes were very rare for the time, as was Chopin’s departure from traditional gender roles in her works.
