1

Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice No list of classics would be complete without mentioning “Pride and Prejudice.” Written by Jane Austen, it’s the ultimate in romantic tales. It chronicles the love story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy set in England in the 18th century. There are personality clashes between the two main characters, set in a time when one’s behavior in society was of utmost importance. Many movies have been made trying to replicate the magic of this story.

Little Women

Little Women This story of sisterhood is set during the time period of the Civil War and afterward. Four sisters face the trials of life together as their mother tries to support them while their father is away at war. Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy all have different personalities but that doesn’t stop them from sharing the closest of sisterly bonds. They face all sorts of adventures together. It’s a lovely book every girl should read.

3

Gone with the Wind

Gone with the Wind One of my absolute favorites! This book isn’t for those who love a quick read. But if you’re the type to enjoy digging into a story that pulls you in then this one’s for you. The unparalleled love story of Rhett and Scarlett will melt your heart. Set in the Civil War era, this book gives you a feel for what it may have been like to live in those times.

4

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet Everyone needs a bit of Shakespeare. Old English can be difficult to decipher but it’s worth the effort. As are many of his works, this one is written in the format of a play. Nevertheless, the story of Romeo and Juliet is enchanting but also tragic. If you’ve never read this writing then it’s a must.

5

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby The roaring '20s come to life in this fictional tale of life in high society. Jay Gatsby has fallen in love with Daisy Buchanan which is unfortunate since she marries someone else who doesn’t value her as he should. Gatsby dreams of having her for his own despite the fact that she’s taken. He devotes his life to making more money and waiting for Daisy to become his. A story with a tragic end, it’s a peek into a time when the world had very different standards.

To give oneself earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.

The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count of Monte Cristo This story is full of more than romance. It’s about adventure and a life of excitement that has twists and turns you won’t anticipate. Edmond Dantes is wrongly imprisoned after the betrayal of his best friend. He later finds himself with a treasure that allows him to make himself over into a new individual, “The Count of Monte Cristo.” With an agenda for vengeance, he sets out to redeem his past. But after all his adventures and misadventures, love is still a possibility.

7

Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables I couldn’t resist including the story of Anne with an “e.” This tale of delightful, imaginative, spirited orphan girl Anne is one that never gets old. Anne is taken in by a sister and brother duo, Marilla and Matthew, and promptly begins to liven up their routine lives. Her adventures are numerous but she manages to steal the affections of many, including her best friend Diana and enemy turned crush, Gilbert. If you love this book then there are more to enjoy in this series.

These are 7 classics every girl should read at least once. Which ones interest you? What’s your favorite classic?
